Pangolin Scales

Description

Pangolin scales have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Asia and Africa. Derived from pangolins, which are often called “scaly anteaters,” their scales are made of keratin—the same material that forms human nails and hair. Despite being scientifically unproven, the belief in the medicinal properties of pangolin scales has driven high demand for these animals, leading to their overexploitation and pushing them to the brink of extinction.

1. Traditional Uses in Medicine

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), pangolin  are considered a valuable remedy for various ailments. These include:

• Stimulating lactation: In TCM, pangolin scales are believed to promote milk production in nursing mothers. Powdered scales are often incorporated into concoctions designed to stimulate the mammary glands, helping women who struggle with breastfeeding.
• Improving circulation: Another widespread belief is that pangolin scales can help improve blood circulation and resolve blood stasis, a condition where blood flow becomes stagnant in parts of the body, causing pain or discomfort.
• Relieving swelling and inflammation: Pangolin scales are used to treat inflammation, such as in cases of arthritis or joint pain, by being ground into a powder and mixed into medicinal preparations. It’s thought to reduce swelling and ease discomfort.
• Treating skin conditions: They have also been employed to treat a range of skin conditions, such as abscesses, boils, or rashes. By promoting the expulsion of pus and toxins, it is believed that pangolin scales help in the healing process.

2. Cultural Beliefs and Symbolism

Beyond specific medicinal uses, pangolins hold a certain cultural significance in some societies. In parts of Africa, for instance, the scales are used as charms or in ritualistic practices to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. Some cultures view pangolins as symbols of protection, strength, and endurance, further fueling demand for their body parts beyond medicinal applications.
